This year, the event will take place online, with videos 1pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday up until 13 December, starting on World Kimchi Day, 22 November! The Kimjang Festival is now a part of the annual Kingston Korea Festival is organised by the Korean British Cultural Exchange (KBCE), a charity that runs educational activities and events to promote Korean culture in the UK. The Kimjang Festival began as part of the Kimjang Project 2019, Kimjang: Making and Sharing Kimchi. A project that was made possible due to funding by the National Heritage Lottery Fund. Kimjang Festival 2020 will take place online, with varioys segments of the festival programme streamed on our YouTube channel every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from the 22nd November until the 13th December. In the first week, we will preview this year’s festival programme which include the kimchi making videos, restaurant showcase, fusion recipes by WIKIM and the launch for the Kimjang Project kimchi recipe book and videos. The benefits of fermented foods like kimchi are well documented, but the cultural significance around the preparation of kimchi is less well-known outside of Korea. Like ‘stir up Sunday’, Koreans have Kimjang, where villagers gather in late autumn/early winter to make kimchi for the months ahead. At these communal get together recipes are passed down through families, typically from one generation to the next. Newcomers to the community might also introduce their own village recipes. This tradition is still commonly practiced in both North and South Korea, and sharing kimchi ensures that everyone in the community has food to sustain them through the winter. Kimjang was inscribed as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2013 (South Korea) and 2015 (North Korea).
